Middle East Accessibility

Since the early 1990’s when the “Americans with Disabilities Act” was ratified, accessible signs have found their way to being standardized in most western countries through international guidelines and the work of global design firms. However, the effort has been uneven once we move to rapidly modernize locations like China, India and the Middle East. These places are seeing developments of advanced buildings meant to serve a multi-cultural audience, but without the regulatory structures and best practices utilized in the west.

White Paper Goals:

  • Understand the direction of accessibility codes in the Middle East.
  • Review a series of accessible practices that will be consistent with standards defined by the International Standards Organization (ISO) that will be integrated into future regulatory codes.
  • Best practices for matching codes with design traditions evolving in the Middle East.
